Pentax K-01

Pentax K-01 with SMC Pentax - A 50mm 2.0I

My review of the mighty Pentax K-01

It's been a little over a year since I started shooting almost exclusively with the Pentax K-01. So far I've shot some editorial portraits, family portraits , it's been with me on a trip to Puerto Rico ,have shot 3 music videos and a wedding with it. I also use it a lot for concert photography. It does everything I need it to do ,for what I do. However there are different scenarios in which I may want to use one of my other cameras. For the most part it's a little champ in my book and made me a believer in mirror-less cameras. Not that I ever doubted them anyways.

Most other peoples opinions on this camera can be viewed over at DP Review .
This is My review of the mighty Pentax K-01. My opinion is solely based on my experience with the K-01 on my daily needs. We all get gear lust at some point as photographers. I try to keep my gear to a minimum so for this to be added to the family It needed to fill a gap. In other words I needed to find a logical use for it. I had some vintage K-mount glass laying around ( J.C. Penny 28mm 2.8 and a Sears 80-200mm 4.0) from my old Ricoh KR-10 Super that got me through commercial photography classes and a few weddings in the late 90's. So, I wanted to use that glass again in a modern kinda way and since the K-01 accepts K-mount lenses. It was a no brainier for me.

Vintage Glass

Most days I shoot with vintage glass ,all manual. It's the way I like to roll for most situations these days. If it was done in the 70's and before with no AF. Why not today? There's just something about those vintage lenses that warms my heart. I added 2 more lenses to the line up an Asahi Pentax 135mm 3.5 and a SMC Pentax A 50mm 2.0. Most of these lenses can be had for cheap on ebay and in good condition too.

Reviews and tech details to these lenses can be found by clicking the links.

Real World Use

If a camera wants to be my camera ,then It's gotta roll like I roll. So it tagged along with me for several shows, portrait sessions, travels and whatever else came my way .No colour wheels, zebra lines or pictures of squirrels. Just straight up everyday use to test the K-01.

The lack of view finder didn’t bother me. This set up isn’t for everyone,I understand. However I didn’t feel it crippled my ability to create a portrait or 2.

Yeah ... no squirrels. However here's an Oscar The Grouch T-shirt. He's so rad!

The Verdict

The Pentax K-01 is a camera that reminds me a lot of the old Pentax 35mm film cameras like the Asahi Peantax .I have no problem shooting it all in manual,I want to decide the settings to use and I don’t want the camera doing it for me.In my opinion,I feel that it's a great camera. It may not be for everyone, but it sure is for me. Thanks for checking out my review of the mighty Pentax K-01.

Stage Fright

Stage Fright  is a personal  project on shows. Being that not every venue allows "Pro" cameras I shot these with whatever camera I had at the moment. Including a Kodak ZX3 camera. I like the challenge. All for the love of music. By the way support your local musicians , show em' love ,go to their shows you may have some fun.

More of Mr. Moore.

Once again , I set out to shoot comedian/singer Samuel J. Moore in the streets of downtown Orlando ,Fl. Always an adventure finding locations however not hard at all. In a small area one has many options for backgrounds and such.So many that in fact it can look like a totally new location just a few feet away. Personally I like how the wall color matches his tie.

Samuel J. Moore

 One Funny Guy.

Comedian and singer Samuel J . Moore stopped by our studio the other day. Fun session with a great entertainer. He brings smiles to peoples faces with his comedic antics and singing skills. I was amazed at how well he could sing and entertain a crowd. Samuel sure is one funny guy.
